Springfield Clinic 1st Expansion
Project Summary
Hanson provided electrical and structural engineering and commissioning services for a four-story, 133,800-square-foot, steel-framed medical office building and pedestrian skywalk for Springfield Clinic and Memorial Health Systems in Springfield, Illinois. The $60.5 million building is constructed on a 4-acre site on Memorial Medical Center’s campus at the northeast corner of Dodge and First streets. The skywalk connects to Springfield Clinic’s existing facility on First Street.
The office space includes a women’s health center on the first two floors, consolidating Springfield Clinic’s two OB/GYN practices. The third floor houses Springfield Clinic’s general surgery and colon and rectal surgery departments, while the fourth floor contains the clinic’s cancer care center. The facility accommodates approximately 65 physicians, surgeons and mid-level providers.
The lighting system within the building is composed of high-efficiency T8 and LED light fixtures and uses a combination of lighting control relay and dimming panels, local occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting devices. The power distribution system consists of a 2500A main switchboard and a series of 208Y/120- and 480Y/277-volt panelboards to distribute power to the convenience power outlets; equipment for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC); small motors; and other electrical systems within the facility.
Emergency power is also designed into the building, with dedicated branches for life safety systems and optional emergency equipment loads. The emergency power is provided by a standby diesel generator. A new voice-type fire alarm and notification system was designed for the facility as well as a CCTV system, electronic access control system, public address system and nurse call system.
Additionally, an area of rescue assistance system is designed into the building’s exit stair towers. A Category 6 telecommunications system is designed into the facility, consisting of Category 6 cabling, jacks, patch panels and drops for wireless access nodes. Fiber optic cabling is provided between the new building and the existing hospital to tie the new building into the campus's data network.
The project included a parking garage and a significant amount of additional pedestrian and landscape light fixtures for the site. The lighting is controlled by a lighting relay panel and a time schedule off of the building management system.
The entire project was modeled in Autodesk’s Revit to design, prepare construction documents and provide 3D clash detection and true multi-discipline coordination within the facility.
The systems commissioned by Hanson included the HVAC, electrical (emergency generator, emergency distribution, automatic transfer switches and lighting control panels and zones) and the plumbing (domestic water booster pumps, hot water recirculation pump, gas-fired water heaters and duplex med gas vacuum pumps) systems. Commissioning services began during the design phase and continued through the construction, acceptance and post-acceptance phases. Hanson used a cloud-based commissioning tool (CxAlloy) throughout the project.
