We can package the planning into facility-planning documents tailored to meet the requirements of multiple funding agencies and help in the pursuit of loan or grant funds.

Wastewater design services

Our wastewater discipline has a skill set to cover design from the point a drop of water goes down a customer’s drain until it is discharged back into a stream or river after treatment. Our services cover:

  • Gravity sewers: We can design a new or replacement sewer from 8 inches diameter and up. Our team’s experience includes many materials, from connecting to hand-laid brick sewers, aged concrete sewers and clay tiles to modern polyvinyl chloride and fiberglass piping.
  • Sanitary lift stations: Our long history of lift station design ranges from individual, residential stations up to multipump networks with shared force mains. Our design team has tackled complex pumping scenarios, as well as designs for future expansion and growth.
  • Sanitary force mains: Force main design goes hand in hand with lift station design. Our team regularly designs force mains for simple systems and complex, multistation networks, evaluating system hydraulics carefully to keep the flow moving and stations at the right capacity.
  • Treatment: Our wastewater discipline can tackle treatment plant designs of all sizes. Our resume includes small, on-site treatment; facultative and aerobic lagoons; and traditional treatment using activated sludge. We can assist with automatic and manual plant screening, multiple methods of grit removal, aerobic treatment through activated sludge, membrane bioreactors, clarification, tertiary filtration using various sand and fabric filter systems, disinfection using chlorine and ultraviolet systems and small package treatment units for decentralized systems.

Program management

For many communities, timing and locating funding matter as much as the design project itself.  We can help you with funding applications for multiple state and federal agencies. We have grant-writing staff who can identify grant opportunities and help you apply for the funding. Our team can create a capital improvement plan that fits within your funds and identify multiyear infrastructure plans. We can help with:

  • loan and grant applications and administration, including federal and state programs
  • capital improvement program development
  • impact fee analysis, updates and implementation
  • budgeting assistance
  • debt service calculations

Our team can review your source water and work with your community to develop a water conservation and drought contingency plan that will help prepare you for the worst. We can also assist you with creating an emergency preparedness plan that meets the requirements of your state’s regulatory group.

Water design

If your community needs design, bidding and construction assistance, our team can assist you in most areas of water system design.

We specialize in shallow gravel pack, deep long-shaft and submersible wells.
We have designed and overseen many miles of water mains, ranging from small, residential mains through 36-inch, major transmission mains. Our experience covers simple removal and replacement through new water main looping, trunk lines and parallel mains for added capacity. Our team works hard to plan interconnections within the system and customize the sequence of operation for the connection of the new mains to minimize impacts on customers.

We can work with your community on small booster pump stations to maintain system pressure to high and low service stations, feeding water treatment plants or maintaining system pressures. Our team can also assist with improving the operation of multiple pump systems to reduce power consumption and save on your operating costs.
Our skilled design team can assist with the design of various water treatment methods, including clarification, pressure and gravity filtration, chemical feed systems, microfiltration and reverse osmosis. We can also help you evaluate and treat your water for emerging contaminants.
Storage, elevated and ground, includes multiple disciplines within Hanson. We employ our geotechnical discipline to evaluate for foundations; our structural discipline to design the foundations; and our water discipline to determine the size, shape, volume and head range of the required tank. We can also recommend a coating system and, if necessary, cathodic protection for the tank.

PFAS mitigation measures

We can help you navigate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulations regarding polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by assisting public water systems (PWS) with sampling, treatment and compliance solutions and implementing mitigation measures. Mitigation can include:

  • consolidating with neighboring PWSs whose sources do not have PFAS issues
  • decommissioning wells or intakes that have PFAS issues
  • pursuing alternative sources of supply that do not have PFAS issues
  • implementing enhanced treatment technologies for finished water, including adsorption through activated carbon filtration, ion exchange using a selective resin and reverse osmosis
  • Hanson can also assist communities with the application process for revolving loan funds, including potential grants and principal forgiveness for the PWSs that qualify.
