NS Bridge 462.01 replacement
Project Summary
Hanson provided environmental permitting, geotechnical investigation, water resources, design and construction-phase services for replacement of Norfolk Southern bridges 462.01 M2 and M1 over the Tug River near Matewan, West Virginia.
Hanson's environmental permitting scope of services included a biological assessment, a site visit and wetland determination, endangered species inquiry, a Section 404/401 permit application, floodplain permits and agency coordination. Hanson also provided crayfish and mussel surveys in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Survey.
Water resources tasks included hydraulic modeling, evaluation of two proposed bridge alternatives and assessment of potential impacts to existing water surface profiles, proposed conditions scour analysis and a technical summary memo. Hanson coordinated with a local drilling contractor to perform soil and rock drilling at the bridge site. Boring logs and a geotechnical report were generated for use in designing and constructing the new bridge foundations.
Hanson also completed preliminary and final design, plans, specifications and opinion of probable construction costs for the project. Design included replacement of each bridge with the same three-span through-plate girder structure with a ballasted steel deck and a center span of 165 feet over the main channel with smaller, equal-length approach spans at each end. The substructures consist of drilled shaft piers with cast-in-place caps and drilled pile abutments with precast concrete caps. Drilled shafts and piles will be constructed between and around the existing structures. Hanson used the existing track survey and proposed bridge layout to design the track alignment and profile, in addition to providing bridge clearance review and modifications.
The construction-related scope of services included review of structural steel shop drawings, weld procedures, response to requests for information during the structural steel fabrication phase, construction management for drilled shaft installation and a pre-construction meeting.
