Indiana Rail Road
Project Summary
The Indiana Rail Road (INRD), which serves customers in Illinois’ Jasper and Crawford counties, needed to upgrade eight of its timber bridges to support railcars that are rated for 286,000 pounds. INRD received grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation to complete the upgrade and chose the team of Cooper Rail Service and Hanson for design-build services.
Hanson provided site surveys, geotechnical investigations, environmental permitting, hydraulics and hydrology studies, bridge design and construction documents for the new bridges. The bridges were constructed with industry standard prestressed, precast concrete superstructure, supported by steel piles and precast concrete caps.
The materials the project team chose for the bridge construction allowed INRD to maintain rail traffic to customers during the replacement work. Short periods of a few hours were used to allow the old bridge to be removed and the new bridge to be installed ahead of the track construction.
