Indiana Hoosier SAFE-T – Emergency Communications System
Project Summary
Communication is crucial during emergencies, especially between the people and the agencies who are responding to the situation. Project Hoosier SAFE-T (Safety Acting for Everyone Together), a statewide radio communications project, works with agencies across Indiana.
Project Hoosier SAFE-T allows reliable communications among local, state and federal public safety agencies during routine, emergency and task force situations – strengthening community safety and security, reducing costs and barriers to communications, and breaking down regionalization of systems to combat crime, natural disaster and terrorism.
Prior to this program, emergency service responders were unable to communicate efficiently with other units or agencies located outside of their counties without using extreme measures, thereby losing valuable response time.
Hanson served as the program manager/tower integrator for this statewide, interoperable, wireless public safety communications system. Our team identified approximately 160 sites that require enhancements or additions to existing or new emergency communications facilities and antenna towers.
We confirmed the site’s suitability, secured properties, designed facilities and improvements, prepared construction drawings, obtained permits, coordinated utilities and provided construction services at each location to accommodate Motorola's radio equipment. Additionally, this project used GIS technology, creating a database of tower information for our client.
Each site has a standby power generator to provide backup power to the communications equipment shelter, ranging in size from 35- to 75-kilowatts. The team used specially selected power generation units near residential areas to reduce noise pollution.
Project Hoosier SAFE-T operates on a Motorola 4.1 Astro Smartzone OmniLink 800-MHz trunked voice and data system. It supports both analog and digital radios, providing 95 percent mobile radio coverage statewide using communications sites connected by T1 lines and microwave.
