Ameren Missouri AMI
Project Summary
Hanson provided co-op agreement negotiations, land acquisition and construction contract management services for Ameren’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system throughout Missouri.
Prior to the Missouri project, Hanson had completed similar work for Ameren Illinois. Near the completion of that project, Ameren staff met with members of the Missouri team who would lead that state’s deployment. Ameren Illinois recommended Hanson to Ameren Missouri because of the project team’s value in terms of problem-solving and follow-through.
The Missouri project encompassed more than 1,500 locations for AMI electronic communication units. The construction management scope of services included preparing construction performance details using Ameren’s AMI installation specifications, developing and submitting service requests for all AMI locations, coordinating with landowners regarding the project timeline, providing construction observation and project management and coordinating with contractors regarding installation locations and landowner and utility provider approvals to begin construction.
Hanson’s land acquisition tasks included project management, developing a land management GIS database for real-time use throughout the project, contacting landowners, negotiating easement or lease documents, recording signed documents and entering the final documents into Ameren’s real estate management system.
One of the most challenging aspects of the project was managing the land acquisition and construction that were occurring simultaneously throughout the state. With pursuing nearly 750 locations at one time, with nearly half of them ready for construction, staying on top of the project and ahead of any potential issues was a key element to Hanson’s and Ameren’s success.
Using an upgraded version of the geographic information system management database developed for Illinois, Hanson tracked the project’s cumulative progress in real time. Assigning new points geographically to group areas together for land acquisition or to release to the contractor was also key to reducing travel and mobilization time to project sites. Ameren also had access to a dashboard of this data so they could monitor the progress. Weekly updates to the database throughout the project reflected Ameren’s desired deployment schedule.
