Hanson project wins ACEC Florida award
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC-FL) recognized Hanson Professional Services Inc. for its work on the State Road (SR) A1A/San Marco intersection improvements in St. Augustine. Hanson received an Outstanding Special Project Award as part of the organization’s Outstanding Project Awards.
The awards recognize member firms’ achievements in Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) studies and projects. The winners were recognized May 25 during the ACEC-FL Transportation Conference in Orlando.
During this project, Hanson worked with FDOT’s District Two to develop a multi-intersection improvement concept to alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic flow at one of the gateways to St. Augustine’s historic downtown. The intersection is an important connecting point for U.S. 1 and SR A1A, providing access to downtown St. Augustine, the area’s beaches, neighborhoods, businesses and the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind.
The project, which began as a much smaller drainage design effort to reduce problematic flooding, expanded over time into a full roadway reconstruction. The project involved integrating two adjacent signalized intersections to form a single quadrant/offset T-intersection, as well as the design of bike lanes, enhanced pedestrian lighting, a high-intensity activated crosswalk pedestrian crossing and an extended sidewalk along U.S. 1. The project included significant drainage improvements to better convey stormwater and a separate contract with the city to upgrade aging utilities.
