ACEC Washington recognizes Hanson for habitat restoration
BELLEVUE, Wash. — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Washington (ACEC Washington) recently recognized Hanson Professional Services Inc. for work on a habitat restoration in Chelan County.
Hanson received a National Silver Award in the environmental category Jan. 22 during ACEC Washington’s Engineering Excellence Awards banquet in Bellevue. In 2013, an 89-foot railroad bridge was constructed on BNSF Railway Co.’s single-track main line in the Cascade Mountains to restore endangered fish populations in the Upper Columbia River Basin. The bridge reconnects Nason Creek with 140 acres of its historic floodplain, providing spawning and rearing habitat for endangered salmon, steelhead and bulltrout.
A major challenge for the project was constructing the new bridge and removing culverts with minimal interruption to train traffic. Hanson, which served as the railroad engineering and railroad bridge design consultant to ICF International Inc., developed a construction phasing plan that included pile driving during specific work windows and culvert excavation after the new bridge was in place and in operation.
The project was made possible by a group of stakeholders, including power generators, tribal authorities, regulatory agencies, BNSF, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and multiple consultants, under the leadership of the Chelan County Natural Resource Department.
ACEC is a professional organization of 51 state and regional councils with members from more than 5,000 engineering firms across the U.S. The annual Engineering Excellence Awards recognizes outstanding achievements from member firms.
Hanson is a national, employee-owned consulting firm providing engineering, planning and allied services. The Seattle regional office is located at 11711 SE Eighth Street, Suite 120, Bellevue, WA 98005. The office may be reached by phone at (425) 576-1690.
