Heyen named Young Engineer of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Matt Heyen, P.E., a transportation engineer at Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Springfield, Ill., headquarters, recently received the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers’ (ISPE) Young Engineer of the Year Award.

Heyen, who serves Hanson’s infrastructure market, joined the company in 2001. His responsibilities include geometric design of roadways and railways; design of storm and sanitary sewers; and project, client and utility management. He has been involved with award-winning projects such as the reconstruction of Interstate 74 through downtown Peoria, Ill., the reconstruction of Interstate 294 in Chicago, the Capitol Avenue streetscape design and beautification in Springfield and tiered environmental impact studies for high-speed rail for the Chicago-to-St. Louis corridor and for Springfield.

He has been a member of ISPE’s Capital Chapter since 2001 and received the chapter’s Young Engineer of the Year Award in 2006. He has held various posts in the chapter, including treasurer, secretary, vice president and president. In 2011, he served as the ISPE Capital Chapter/ASCE West Branch Annual Awards Banquet chair and was on the ISPE Nominating and Awards Committee. He also is a member of the American Public Works Association, American Society of Civil Engineers and National Society of Professional Engineers. His community involvement includes active roles in Hanson’s United Way committee and with area schools.

Heyen has a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from MacMurray College and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a licensed professional engineer in Iowa and Illinois.

The Young Engineer of the Year Award is based on educational and engineering achievements, professional and technical society activities, civic and humanitarian activities and continuing professional competence. Heyen and other ISPE award recipients will be honored at a luncheon July 26 during the organization’s annual conference in Lisle, Ill.
